22-3110 Art Theory Seminar This course surveys major concepts and methods of 20th century art theory and criticism from the early formalism of Roger Fry and Clive Bell through the late Modernism critical theories of Clement Greenberg and beyond. Art-historical points of view such as stylistic analysis, iconography, structuralism and semiotics, and the social history of art are covered. Discussion of contemporary critical positions of Post-Modernism includes Post-Structuralist attitudes and responses to art found in Deconstructionism, Feminism, Neo-Marxism, and identity politics.
