In this course students will study the fundamental techniques, terminology, and history common to traditional West African Dances, primarily those derived from the Old Mali Empire. Developmental exercises will condition the body and refine the ear for the polycentric and polyrhythmic requirements of the forms. Students will learn rhythms (steps) that integrate polycentric somatic forms in space with polyrhythmic patterns in time and emphasize grounded stance and apprpriate use of alignment.
