HIST 269 Slavery and Its Afterlives

This course introduces students to the history and mechanics of antebellum slavery, the abolitionist movement, and the afterlives of this institution. Accordingly, we will explore histories and narratives of slavery during three major time periods: antebellum slavery, the decades after emancipation, and the decades after the Civil Rights Movement. Students will walk away from the course with some exposure to slave narratives as a pre- and post-emancipation genre and a better understanding of the historiographical debates around the institution of slavery and its impact.
