56-2840 Physics for Filmmakers This class is for students who wish to learn how to use laws of physics in more accurate and /or artistically deliberate choices in their filmmaking, as well as in debunking common movies errors and misconceptions. Emphasis is placed on motion, collisions, explosions, forces and energy. Other topics include the formation of images (optics), electrical, magnetic and atomic phenomena as well as Einstein’s theory of relativity and quantum theory. All these are discussed within the context of their use in cinema through analysis of selected film clips. The class includes relevant experiments that students have to perform and often also film. (Cameras are provided.) Students will have to complete a short 5-10 minute film project where they creatively apply some of the physics they learned.
