22-2142 Art of India


This course covers 4,000 years of art on the Indian subcontinent. Beginning with the Indus Valley Civilization, the course follows the development of painting, sculpture, and architecture created for the region’s varied religions and rulers. The course concludes with modern and contemporary Indian art, with an emphasis on how it relates to the past. Indian religious, royal, and popular art forms will be examined in terms of their style, iconography, and meaning in context.
