MUSC 163 Afro-Latin and Caribbean: US Musical Crosscurrents This course examines the musical traditions of the African diaspora as they have developed within Latin America and the Caribbean and their significant influence on popular music in the US. Through reading, writing, and focused listening, students will explore historical and contemporary musical styles from Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, the French Antilles and Brazil. Through close consideration of the music’s political, social, and cultural contexts, students will develop an understanding of the shared roots, diasporal unities, and rich practices of exchange associated with the musical cultures of this region.
