46-2420 Puerto Rican Culture: Negotiation and Resistance This course is an inquiry into the concept of national culture, the issues of cultural resistance and negotiation, and the complexities of citizenship and representation in Puerto Rico. The island is unique in its development during the 20th century because it is, in fact, a nation without a sovereign state, and its political relationship with the United States, along with its cultural and historical links to Latin America, provide fascinating perspectives in subjectivity, transculturation, nationalism, and popular and official cultures.
