33-6751 Graduate Dance Studies I: Political Approaches to Reading Dances Taken concurrently with Graduate Dancemaking I:, the first course in the Graduate Dance Studies Sequence will expose students to theories regarding how dances can read as legible, yet contested, texts. Particular concern will be paid to how cultural and historical contexts mediate interpretation. Through readings concerned largely with post-structuralist enterprises such as semiotic and post-colonial theory and viewings of dance documentation, students will engage with various interpretations and evaluations of dances in theatrical and ethnographic settings.
