Communication Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors and Programs

The Communication minor centers on the power of storytelling to connect people, build understanding, and strengthen communities. Students explore how stories shape identity, influence culture, and create social change across interpersonal, organizational, and public contexts.

Through hands-on coursework, students develop skills in message design, media creation, listening, and ethical communication. Emphasis is placed on community-engaged storytelling—working collaboratively, amplifying diverse voices, and communicating with purpose across platforms and audiences.

This minor complements a wide range of majors and prepares students to communicate thoughtfully and effectively in careers that value connection, advocacy, leadership, and community engagement.

As a result of successfully completing program requirements, students should be able to:

·  Analyze how storytelling shapes identity, culture, and social change across interpersonal, organizational, and public communication contexts.

·  Design and adapt messages across multiple platforms and audiences, demonstrating flexibility in tone, medium, and strategy to communicate effectively in diverse settings.

·  Create ethical and purpose-driven communication that reflects responsible storytelling, active listening, and respect for diverse perspectives and community voices.

·  Apply communication theory and practice in collaborative, community-engaged projects that support leadership, advocacy, and meaningful community connection.
