Through reading, writing, and focused listening, students explore the range of challenges to the traditional high art canon asserted through new technologies, new philosophies, and the ascendency of African-American musical practices. While all sections examine a range of modern musical practices, specific sections focus on particular traditions. Section 01: European-derived composition (for composition and performance students); section 02: Jazz (for jazz and performance students); section 03: American popular music (for CUP and performance students).
