This practicum course is designed to give students opportunities to observe and to be guided in assisting teacher artists in after-school and/or community-arts program settings, in preparation for a subsequent teaching artist internship. In addition to a minimum of 15 field-site hours, students will meet several times on campus during the semester in a seminar setting to critically analyze and reflect on their experiences in the field. The seminars are designed primarily to support students as they develop a deeper understanding of the relation between the theory and practice of teaching artistry, as well as the skills for working with children, youth, and adults in school and community-program settings. The practicum course should be taken at least one semester before registering for the Teaching Artist Internship, which is offered through the Columbia College Chicago Career Center.
