PSYC 217 Positive Psychology Historically, and understandably, psychology focuses on decreasing negative and maladaptive emotions and behaviors. This focus will not and should not be abandoned. However, after WWII a need emerged to study how human beings prosper in the face of adversity. Consequently, the scientific study of Positive Psychology emerged to identify and enhance the human strengths and virtues that make life worth living and allow individuals and communities to thrive. The goal of this course is to help individuals understand and enhance their own and others’ happiness and well-being to lead more meaningful and fulfilling lives.
