PHIL 301 Eastern Philosophy This course is designed to explore Eastern spiritual and philosophical traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Shintosim, and Confucianism. We will compare and contrast these different philosophical systems with each other as well as Western systems, but the focus will be on relating Eastern philosophies to the students’ lives today. As a class, students will help direct the focus, and learn to actively apply Eastern wisdom traditions to their own 21st century philosophical concerns. Eastern philosophy is lived, embodied practice, not just intellectual reflection. We will actively experience some of these practices in class, including meditation techniques, calligraphy, mandala creation, tea ceremony, Confucian rites of civility, and so on.
