33-1341 West African Dance Technique I This course will engage foundational techniques, terminology, and history common to traditional West African Dances, primarily those derived from the Old Mali Empire. Developmental exercises will condition the body and refine the ear for the polycentric and polyrhythmic requirements of the forms. Students will learn rhythms (steps) that integrate polycentric somatic forms in space with polyrhythmic patterns in time and emphasize grounded stance and appropriate use of alignment. All African dance classes have live percussion accompaniment.
