Theatre Directing Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors and Programs

The goal of the minor in Directing is to provide students with a concentrated introduction to the theories, skills, and practice of directing for the theater.

As a result of successfully completing program requirements, students should be able to:

  •  identify the tasks involved for the various disciplines that contribute to the process of mounting a theatrical production;
  • demonstrate the organizational skills required of the directing process through project management;
  • understand dramatic structure as a key element of the directing process; and
  • exhibit leadership abilities in the process of mounting a production as the director.

In the Minor's capstone course, students will coordinate all of these elements through the production of a short excerpt (no more than 20 minutes) from a play, using limited design elements.

This minor will be of interest to students who wish to develop an understanding of the skills necessary to conceptualize, organize, and facilitate the preparation of scripted material for performance.
