The goal of the BFA in Film and Television is to provide students the opportunity to learn and practice technical, analytical, and collaborative skills that will serve them in entering the film and television industries. Students will work on individual and group film and television projects that can be utilized to build a portfolio of visual or written media.
Film and Television BFA students complete 75 credits in the major which include 30 credits of required core classes and at least 45 hours in one of two areas: a concentration in directing or cinematography. Both concentrations culminate in the creation of a Thesis Project. Courses prepare students for employment or advanced study and provide the opportunity to assemble a strong portfolio of work in film and television projects.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successfully completing program degree requirements, students should be able to:
- Express personal voice, vision, and intent using written, visual, and aural storytelling skills to produce fiction, nonfiction, and / or experimental projects with originality and aesthetic depth.
- Demonstrate technical proficiency and project management by collaborating on films, videos, series, and other media using industry standards and practices.
- Examine personal work and the work of others in the critical context of cinema and television history, aesthetics, and cultural influences.
- Practice inclusivity in the production and analysis of media arts to contribute to a more diverse and equitable industry.
- Develop a path from college to creative career in existing and emergent media forms.
- Focus on areas of creative craft within a specific area of practice.
- Develop a portfolio of work that demonstrates facility in area of focus.
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with actors to create and capture psychologically believable screen performances.
- Analyze a text as a blueprint for a screen story and prepare relevant preproduction materials necessary for visualization and collaboration.
- Effectively tell a visual screen story through cinematic elements including camera, lighting, production design, editing and audio.
