The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography in the School of Visual Arts at Columbia College Chicago is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education that balances technical skill, creative exploration, and a deep understanding of photography’s historical and social contexts. Located in the vibrant heart of Chicago, students have unparalleled access to world-class museums, galleries, and a dynamic art community. This program specializes in commercial, fashion, and fine art photography practice preparing students for successful careers. With state-of-the-art studios, cutting-edge equipment, and fully equipped darkrooms, students will develop their unique artistic voice and have the opportunity to participate in experiential learning projects that elevate diverse voices and develop social awareness.
As a result of successfully completing program requirements, students should be able to:
- gain proficiency in advanced photographic techniques, including studio lighting, digital imaging, and traditional darkroom processes;
- analyze key movements, influential photographers, and the evolution of photography to understand its role in shaping cultural and social narratives;
- develop an understanding of commercial photography practices, including fashion photography, marketing strategies, client relations, and professional portfolio development;
- collaborate with local communities to develop projects that promote social awareness and diversity, using photography to meet community aspirations;
- critically evaluate photographic works, including their own, through informed perspectives that enhance artistic development;
- construct a professional portfolio that effectively communicates individual artistic vision and technical skills, tailored for careers in commercial, fashion, or fine art photography exhibition and graduate applications;
- participate in workshops, guest lectures, and networking events with industry leaders, gaining insights into various career opportunities; and
- reflect on the ethical implications of photographic practices, fostering a sense of responsibility in representing diverse voices and addressing social awareness.
