The Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition for Media prepares students for an exciting career in today’s media-driven world, as lead composers in their own right, or in a variety of professional roles supporting media music creation, from entry-level to higher-level creative-collaboration positions. Some students elect to go on to graduate-level study in the field, including our distinguished MFA in Composition for the Screen, ranked #1 for two consecutive years by the Hollywood Reporter.
Learning Outcomes :
As a result of successfully completing program requirements, students should be able to…
- Compose and produce professional-quality music scores for currently common types of visual media projects using project-appropriate musical language
- Translate dramatic observations into appropriate musical decisions, and communicate these decisions to their collaborators, while also being able to integrate explicit and implied feedback from collaborators into their work.
- Understand the essentials of film, TV and interactive media-production processes and the role of music within them.
- Demonstrate proficiency in audio and MIDI production technology currently used in media music.
- Demonstrate proficiency in listening and auditory discernment, including timbral and electro-acoustic listening skills.
- Communicate effectively about sound and music characteristics and about their own musical works, both to an audience of peers and to the general public.
- Show a portfolio of creative work that is appropriate both for professional project demos and for applications to graduate programs in music composition for media.
- Understand essentials of business issues, publicity, and networking as they pertain to the work of a media composer; of the larger legal and economic context; and of the tools to begin creating and implementing a personal business plan based on their own goals.
