The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Communication curriculum prepares students to contribute intellectually, culturally and creatively as skilled journalists or communicators. Our program is unique as it pushes the boundaries of the traditional journalism and communication BA. Students learn to apply foundational storytelling, media literacy and production communication skills to solve real world challenges through project-based learning, and a range of practicum projects. As students advance in their studies, the skills gained in data analysis and storytelling, multimedia production, leadership, global communications and community engagement are transformed into real-world portfolio projects, opening doors to a wide array of career fields, including journalism, public relations, non-profit communication, civic/government careers and more. The program encourages students to choose from several complementary minors to further develop their skills in a specific area of focus within the media and communication industry. The professional experiences, creative challenges and analytical skills gained prepare students for roles in a range of commercial, artistic and civic endeavors.
As a result of successfully completing program requirements, students should be able to:
- Research and respond to the lived experiences and information and resource needs of local and global communities;
- Evaluate media content and practices with attention to identity and power, and the aims of diversity, equity and inclusion;
- Produce reliably sourced stories in multiple media forms and platforms for specific audiences and the public.
