HIST 256 Hispanics in the U.S. Since 1800 Course tracks the growing importance of Hispanics in all aspects of American life. Their economic impact has become a topic of controversy. The development of a Latino ethnic consciousness has come into conflict with efforts to assimilate this minority group, thus raising the question of what an American really is. Instruction also addresses the controversial topic of their impact on the U.S. economy. These issues cannot be fully understood without an examination of where Hispanics have come from, their hopes, ways they are trying to achieve their dreams, and their continuing obstacles.
