HIST 260 Baseball in History and Literature: A Contested Narrative This course will examine the dynamic cultural meaning of baseball in the United States, from the rise of the professionalism in the mid-19th century to the introduction of free agency and the rise of corporate competitions of the present. Through lectures, readings, and discussions on the history of baseball and analysis of the literary texts the sport inspires, students will explore issues of American identity and examine how sport can be a reflection of society as well as an instrument of change.
