HIST 266 Cartoons and Satire in American History A study of the American past through the humor and satire of the political cartoon. Humor is a political tool. Making fun of one’s opponents is a way of weakening their position. We make fun of that which we oppose, but also of that which we fear. Cartoons illuminate all aspects of the American past: from political battles in Congress to battles on the streets; from gender clashes at home to racial clashes in the workforce.
