DANC 250 American Tap and Percussive Dance History

American Tap and Percussive Dance History explores the cultural sources and evolution of foot drumming from the 17th century to the 21st century in colonial and post-colonial America, with a primary emphasis on how those forms contributed to the evolution of American tap dance. The course focuses on the forced and voluntary migration of African and European peoples whose cultural heritages collided on the North American continent on plantations, cities, minstrelsy, vaudeville, Broadway, jazz clubs and the concert stage and how the interactions between these peoples created a uniquely American art form. Through readings, lectures, discussions and extensive viewing of video and live performance, students come to understand how historical events and sociopolitical and cultural contexts shaped the centuries-old evolution that created social, theatrical, musical, and post-modern genres of American tap and foot drumming.
