41-2112 Radio and American Life This course will examine radio broadcasting and its relationship to American society and culture. Emphasis will be placed on the latter half of the 20th century and contemporary radio (1940-present). Topics will include: radio entertainment, the commercialization of radio; politics and a national identity, the DJ and crossing racial boundaries; radio as youth rebellion, Pacifica, public radio and NPR; talk radio: inclusive-exclusive; a voice for minorities and local communities; and radio’s ability to shape American culture.
