49-2676 Public History: Presenting & Interpreting the Past This course will introduce students to the concept and practice of public history. Through readings, lectures, field trips, films and guest lectures, students will look at how institutions, communities, and people conceive and convey history for public consumption. Students will also explore the relationship between public history and popular memory and culture and consider the meaning of history in public venues. Students are expected to take full advantage of Columbia’s urban campus through visits to cultural institutions, architectural sites, historic monuments, public art, archives and special collections.
